That is probably because your LED is not shinning on in a steady solid manner or because the view that the wii remote has of it is being block periodically. Try moving your wii mote a little closer. Point the LED directly at the Wii remote and make sure you have fresh batteries in both your IR pen and your Wii remote. By the way, you can’t use a TV remote control, as is. TV remote controls use a flashing code to talk to the TV.

This should work if you actually harvest the IR LED out of the remote and solder it into an appropriate circuit, but I sell completed IR pens for as little as $4.75 shipped or a clean, new IR LED for $1.49 shipped. Just search ebay for ir pen.
